Sheriff Says Lakeland Man Killed in Child Swap Was an Angry Dad

LAKELAND -- New information about the deadly shooting during a child custody swap in Lakeland.

Polk County Sheriff Grady Judd said the father, 39 year old Brian Ingram of Alachua County, got angry when the mother's boyfriend refused to turn over Ingram's son to his mother.

He then tried to force his way into her house. The mother's boyfriend, identified as the victim by Judd, shot Ingram five times.

Judd said the parents swapped their one-year-old son each Thursday and Monday. The reason Ingram's mother came along was because Ingram was under a trespass warning and was not allowed to approach the house. According to the sheriff, the child had been taken out of daycare because workers there were afraid of Ingram, who received an other-than-honorable discharge from the armed forces.

Surveillance video shows Ingram running up to the door, covering the peephole, and then forcing his foot into the threshold while ramming the boyfriend's head with the door.

"This guy... just flew hot, decided he would break into the house and... I guess, take the child, or maybe continue to beat on the victim," Judd said.

Judd says prosecutors will decide whether to file charges, but everything he's seen clearly indicates the boyfriend was "protecting his home."
